These are NON-PRACTICAL, in-class lecture sessions.

Self-care practices are not new, and we all engage it in them in daily, moment to moment encounters such as from taking a shower, eating, jogging, walking, breathing to helping a friend or participating in community events. Within the RMT program curriculum Self-care is emphasized in the following documents:

  1. Guidelines for Foundational Knowledge in Massage Therapy Educational Programs Effective November 30, 2018, in the section Self Care, p 113
  2. Inter‐Jurisdictional Practice Competencies and Performance Indicators for Massage Therapists at Entry‐to‐Practice September 2016- Professional Practice -Professionalism 2 j page 14, and Treatment – Therapeutic principles 3.1 j page 20.

With this background a new understanding of self-care emerges one that goes beyond stretching, strengthening, icing and using hot packs, instead we will reimagine the role of the RMT as a Self-care Ambassador.  In this one day in person course participants will:

  • explore the various organizational and cultural descriptions and interpretations of self-care
  • discuss the scientific evidence and role of current and emerging self-care trends and technologies for health and wellbeing
  • discuss the scientific evidence and current organizations researching self-care practices
  • assess personal self-care needs
  • explore the emerging role of the RMT as Self-care Ambassador, and explore ways of integrating self-care in personal and profession practice

Randy Persad, educator and RMT, brings over 33 years of experience in the health care profession.  He continues his education in many areas, including manual therapies, anatomy & physiology, Cannabis physiology, and he has a special interest in the science and physiology of breathing, relaxation and fascial physiology, anatomy and mobilization practices. To this end he has studied Cadaver dissection, attended various fascial special education courses and conferences, and has certification in Biofeedback, Breathing Analaysis, and Mindfulness & Happiness Practices . He began teaching myofascial CECs in the early 2000s to practitioners across Canada and continues to push the boundaries of myofascial therapy. He embraces eastern Vedic practices of yoga, breath awareness, deep relaxation and a vegetarian lifestyle to maintain his health and spiritual balance. He lives in Burnaby BC.
